If you want wide/open drum sound, tape can deliver a more clear punch and better transients response as tape emulation software. Due to the added tape compression there will a better center image and the separation between L/R can become much better.

Overtones, harmonics, inner detail can be enhanced by using tape. Again this is not a one set and forget process, we really need to find the sweetspot to get it right. Adding some Fairman Tube EQ and/or Compression can help me to get the best out of your material.
